Biomedicine versus Holistic Herbalism
The modern biomedical model of health that we have today is primarily geared towards reacting to symptoms rather than at prevention. Biomedicine is about management rather than reversal. The biomedical model goes by many different names: allopathic medicine, western medicine, etc.. You may have heard many of these terms being used to describe our predominant medical system. But I think that best label for our current health care system is biomedical. The reason for this label is because that is how it approaches health care. It seeks to alter and counteract our biochemistry using foreign agents to intervene with our biological processes.
By contrast, the purpose of a holistic practitioner is to educate you to make the best choices for your own health. The holistic model of care focuses on prevention of illness. It seeks to help the body in its own recovery. It doesn’t focus on treating symptoms, but looking for the deeper cause of imbalance.

Notes for the Introduction to the Foundations of Christian Herbalism Course:
DEFINITIONS
Biomedicine
A medical model concerned with the application of biological science and biochemistry to health. Biomedicine defines the predominant form of medicine in our contemporary culture. Largely focused on treating symptoms.
Holistic
A model of medicine that is concerned with the whole person. The definition of a whole person usually includes body, mind, and spirit. This model is largely concerned with identifying root causes on imbalance and education a person in taking charge of their own health.
Reductionism
A scientific philosophy that is concerned with the smallest functional parts of the organism. In the biomedical model this usually refers to specific organs, cells, and/or molecules. Reductionism reduces the person or the plant to its parts, often to the exclusion of he whole.
Wholism
Wholism begins with the view that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This is a highly christian idea. A person in the christian worldiew isn’t just a collection of mechanical parts. A person is more than their body, and is even greater than their mind. Under the Christian worldview a person is made in the image of God, called to attain a likeness to God. A person is a hypostatic union of body, mind, and spirit. This philosophy is sometimes also spelled Holism.
Hypostatic
A hypostatic union is a theological term most often referring to God, in particular to the incarnation of Christ. In its simplest form, it means an inseparable yet unconfused union of different thing. For example, Christ is both fully God and fully Man. The two natures aren’t mingled together, nor are they confused. In other words, they remain distinct from one another. Yet they are also inseparable. When used in regards to the human person, hypostasis refers to the nature of what it means to be a human. The human person is body, mind, and spirit. These are distinct natures that are united in a human person to form one inseparable nature. It is unnatural for a human for example to be without a body. That is why when we spend eternity with the God, we will be given new bodies, glorified bodies.
